Transmission 2.3

SL203

The Space Library has been delving into the galactic archives, this time with SL virgins like the baroque-pop of The Jumping Jacques, a little glam stomp from Hot Rocks – and is that really The Popinjays?

The Flying Lizards recruit the magnificence of Patti Paladin and Michael Nyman to flesh out ‘Hands 2 Take’, there’s Japanese techno-poppers Capsule in an uncharacteristically non-pop moment, and Blackpool’s little known and  decidedly lo-fi Le Lu/Lu’s get it down on tape, in the post, and out to the cassette compilation indie-world. We even delve into a little campery with an ‘Are You Being Served’ set-ette. For the next hour at least, we hope you’re free.

Transmission 2.0

SL2000

It’s 2014, very much so, and time for the next series of The Space Library. Back with a new look, but very few changes on the musical front as we continue to delve into the musical road less travelled. To get started this year there’s some Space Library frequent fliers – artists such as Laurie Anderson, Tom Dissevelt, Philippe Laurent, Pram and Moon Wiring Club (from the excellent new album, please go and buy it available here – UK/EuropeRest of the world), a bunch of Australians (for that is where this show originates), all defunct but all marvelous –  The Reels, Equal Local and B[if]tek (who also provide The Space Library show introduction by the by) and more excellent newcomers such as the amazing Japanese dance troupe World Order – Youtube them, you won’t regret it.

The Space Library Transmission 2.0 first aired on basic.fm Tuesday 5th of March 2014 at 2000 GMT but you can also stream/Download at PodOmatic or Download here.

Transmission 1.21 – Xmas

T1.21 Xmas

It’s that time of year, so here’s a Christmas special – Space Library style. Apart from the odd version of traditional songs, most of these pieces of music have little to do with the event at hand. It is, however, music that sounds to me like it should, or could. Small touches of magic and paganism dot the proceedings, Kahimi Karie covers a lovely Virgina Astley song, there’s some lounge moments, early electronics, modern hauntology, and delicate sounds from Kate Bush, Pizzicato Five and the High Llamas.

Transmission 1.18 – Haunted [Special]

transmission 1.18 haunted

The time has come to delve into the more mysterious vaults of The Space Library for the 2013 Halloween special – Haunted.

A psychic message has suggested we side-step the witches/pumpkin/black cat type of Halloween in favour of a gloomy carnival of possessed laboratories, tables that tilt, E.S.P. phenomena research, mortuaries, 1960′s pop-gothic cinema, disembodied voices, and a boutique de la mort.

Seance instructions are skillfully provided by The Amazing Kreskin, and Hauntological audio has been coaxed out of the Ghost Box roster and Clinkskell’s finest – Moon Wiring Club. You dare not miss the unsettling ambiance of Oneohtrix Point Never, Alan Hawkshaw, The Wash Daddies and Gelg, and be sure to gather around the parlour and clasp your palms together for two of Stephin Merritt’s fine tales of tragic woe.

Goodnight all.

Transmission 1.9

Transmission 1point9

Hello again – Transmission 1.9 is upon us. There’s a little spooky stuff from Moon Wiring Club and Uri Geller (yes, the bendy spoon man), the inevitable coupling of Barbara Morgenstern and Serge Gainbourg’s “Initials” songs, a variety of soundtrack music (spy, horror and whatnot) and one of my favourite Johanna Pigott songs – Kaze No Iro, which translates from Japanese roughly as Colour of the Wind. Oh, and if the Bent track featuring Sian Evans from Kosheen doesn’t give you chills well… actually, there’s no chance it won’t.
